Library events for homeschoolers: how to find them and share them with your group
Last updated: November 2, 2026
To find library events for homeschoolers: check your library’s online events calendar and filter for kids’, family and homeschool programs, ask the youth services librarian about homeschool days, and check nearby branches too. For a group, put those programs next to your own plans: in School Squad, a host pastes the library’s events page and its kids’ events show up.
What libraries often offer homeschoolers
Programs vary a lot from library to library, so treat this as a list of things to look for, not a promise:
- storytimes for younger kids
- STEM, maker and coding clubs
- book clubs and reading programs
- homeschool meetups or homeschool days
- arts, crafts and seasonal events
- meeting rooms that groups can reserve
How to find your library’s programs
- Use the events calendar filters. Most library calendars let you filter by age, branch and category. Try “kids”, “family”, “teens” and “homeschool”.
- Talk to youth services. The children’s or youth services librarian knows what’s coming up, and may be open to a homeschool program if enough families ask.
- Check more than one branch. Nearby branches and neighboring library systems often run different programs.
- Sign up for the newsletter. Many libraries announce programs and registration dates by email.
Libraries as a home base for your group
A library can be more than an event listing. Ask about reserving a meeting room for your group, booking a group visit or tour, or whether the librarians would run a program for homeschoolers. A library visit also makes an easy first outing for a new group. See how to plan a homeschool field trip for a checklist.
Getting library events onto your group’s calendar
Copying library events into a group chat by hand gets old fast. In School Squad, library events show up next to your group’s own plans:
- Built in: picks for public libraries in the Quad Cities area of eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
- Anywhere else: a host pastes the library’s events page under ➕ Add a library by link in Group settings. It works when the library’s calendar runs on LibCal, LibraryCalendar, Communico or The Events Calendar for WordPress, and School Squad shows a preview of the upcoming kids’ events before anything is saved.
- A public Google or iCal calendar: paste the calendar’s own public link. A Google calendar embedded in a web page isn’t picked up.
- Something else: if we can’t read that calendar, you can ask us to add it.
School Squad can also send optional push alerts and opt-in event emails when your group’s events or lessons are added, changed or cancelled; both stay off until you turn them on.
How to tell which calendar your library uses
Open the library’s events page and look at the web address and the bottom of the page. A “libcal” address is LibCal, for example, and many calendars name their platform in the page footer. You don’t have to know, though: paste the events page and the preview will tell you whether School Squad can read it.
Keep it kids-and-family focused
School Squad keeps the kids’ and family events and leaves out adult-only programs. Library events are gathered automatically from public library websites, so details can change: always check with the library before you go.
Questions about library events
Do libraries have programs for homeschoolers?
Many do, but programs vary by library. Look for storytimes, STEM and maker clubs, book clubs, homeschool meetups and meeting rooms groups can reserve, and ask the youth services librarian what’s planned.
How do I find homeschool events at my library?
Use the filters on your library’s online events calendar (age, branch, category), try searching for “homeschool”, check nearby branches, and sign up for the library’s newsletter.
Can I add my library’s events to my homeschool group’s calendar?
Yes. In School Squad, a host pastes the library’s events page in Group settings and its kids’ events show up next to your group’s plans. Libraries in the Quad Cities area are built in.
Which library calendars work with School Squad?
Pasted events pages work when the library’s calendar runs on LibCal, LibraryCalendar, Communico or The Events Calendar for WordPress. A public Google or iCal calendar works when you paste the calendar’s own public link.
Why doesn’t a Google calendar embedded on my library’s site work?
We don’t pick up Google calendars embedded in a web page. If the calendar is public, paste the calendar’s own public link instead.
Are library events in School Squad always up to date?
We gather them automatically from public library websites, so we can’t promise every detail is current. Always check with the library before you go.
