How to schedule a year of homeschool support group events

Last updated: November 2, 2026

To schedule a homeschool support group: pick a steady rhythm (for example a weekly or every-other-week park day, a monthly field trip and a monthly parents’ night), plan one season at a time, give each event an owner and an RSVP deadline, and keep everything on one private calendar families can check and subscribe to.

Support group or co-op?

A support group is usually social: park days, field trips and encouragement for parents. A co-op usually adds shared teaching, where parents take turns leading lessons or classes. This guide is about the support-group side. If you’re still deciding, see how to start a homeschool co-op or support group.

Pick a rhythm families can keep

Steady anchors are easier to remember than one-off dates. A common shape is one regular meetup (a park day weekly or every other week) plus a few monthly specials, like a field trip and a parents’ night out. Start small. It’s easier to add events than to cancel ones families were counting on.

Plan a season at a time

Planning the whole year at once is a lot. Plan one season, share it, then plan the next. Here’s an example season to adapt:

1Park day
2Park dayField trip
3Park dayParents’ night
4Park dayLibrary visit

This is an example, not a rule. Use what fits your group.

Give every event an owner

Each event needs one person who sets the details and makes the call if plans change. Leaders don’t have to own everything: in School Squad, any family can add a park day or field trip by default. If you’d rather review posts, hosts can turn on “Approve new events first”, or let only hosts and co-hosts post.

RSVPs and kid counts

Headcounts matter for venues, group rates and supplies. Ask families to RSVP by a set day. In School Squad, families RSVP with how many kids are coming (and their ages, if you want them), and they can change or remove their own RSVP.

Communicating changes

Weather calls and cancellations are where group chats fail: the message gets buried. Put changes on the event itself. In School Squad, updates and cancellations show on the event, in the group’s “What’s new” list, and in subscribed calendars the next time they refresh. School Squad can also send optional push alerts and opt-in event emails when your group’s events or lessons are added, changed or cancelled; both stay off until you turn them on.

Mix in free community programs

Library kids’ programs fill a calendar without extra work for leaders. You can show your library’s kids’ events next to your group’s plans. See library events for homeschoolers. Church, community and library rooms can also host a meetup when the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Privacy for a growing group

As a group grows, keep its calendar private. School Squad groups are invite-only, families sign in with an emailed 6-digit code, and the full address for a host-home lesson shows only to families who join it.

Support group questions

How often should a homeschool support group meet?

There’s no set rule. Many groups keep one regular meetup, like a weekly or every-other-week park day, and add a few monthly specials.

What events do homeschool support groups usually plan?

Park days, field trips, library visits, holiday parties, parents’ nights out and seasonal events are all common.

How do I keep track of who’s coming?

Ask families to RSVP by a set day. In School Squad, each RSVP includes how many kids are coming, with optional ages.

How do I tell families when an event is cancelled?

Put the change on the event itself. In School Squad, a cancellation shows on the event, in the group’s “What’s new” list, and in subscribed calendars the next time they refresh.

Can I stop families from posting events without approval?

Yes. In School Squad’s Group settings, hosts can turn on “Approve new events first”, or let only hosts and co-hosts post.

What’s the easiest way to share a support group’s calendar privately?

Use one invite-only calendar that families can open on their phone and subscribe to. In School Squad you invite families by link or email.

Plan the season once and every family sees it. Hosts and families try it free for 30 days.
